Description :(Scroll down to see enlarged views) This beautiful gold gilded bottle is four-sided, with a narrow channel inside, and decorative paint in gold on two sides, the opening, and the bottom. The original glass stopper is missing, so sold as found. Tear vials, or lachrymatories, were used in mourning since Roman times, but became quite popular during the Civil War, when the Victorian mourning customs where especially popular. These vials were used to collect the tears one wept for a loved one who died, and when the bottle was full, or after a year, the tears would be poured over the grave site. These are similar in shape and size to some scent bottles of the same period. This vial is in good shape with only some of the gold paint worn off here and there due to age wear. There is also a tiny rough spot on the bottom edge, doesn't look chipped, more like it is part of the vial's creation, part of the pontil perhaps, sold as found. This tear catcher measures: 7 1/8" long.
